Transport Authority warns greedy taxi drivers stop overcharging after Hurricane Melissa
The Transport Authority is warning public passenger vehicle (PPV) operators to stop overcharging riders in the wake of Hurricane Melissa.
Reports have surfaced that some taxi and bus operators across the island hiked fares since the storm's passage. But Managing Director Ralston Smith says the move is flat-out illegal and violates commuters' rights.
"The demand by some PPV operators for commuters to pay more than the approved fare is illegal," Smith warned, adding that anyone caught breaking the rule could lose their road licence.
According to section 68 (1) of the Road Traffic Act, operators who continue to overcharge can have their licences suspended or revoked.
The Authority also cautioned Jamaicans to stick with licensed vehicles, which can be identified by their red plates and light blue Transport Authority stickers showing an expiration date of 2026.
Passengers are being urged to report greedy drivers by calling 876-926-8912 or WhatsApp 876-551-8196. Commuters should include the licence plate number, route, and, if possible, send photos or videos to help officials crack down on the practice.
