Husband pays dearly for hitting wife
A man who was remanded last week for wounding his wife was sentenced to one-year probation yesterday when he appeared in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court.
Carlton Stephenson, 57, had previously pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding.
The court heard that on October 10, the complainant was at home eating her dinner when Stephenson approached her, took the plate from her and aimed it at her face. It is reported that the complainant tried to defend herself and took the plate from him, when Stephenson used his hand and hit her across her lower lip causing it to bleed.
Stephenson told Chief Parish Judge Chester Crooks that the complainant is his wife, but she has occasionally spent time at the home of another man. He said that on the day of the incident, she told him that the other gentleman was going to provide her with dinner.
"This is about the fifth time she move out and go with him and I took her back. I don't know what come over me that day. I turn over the food and then I thought she was going to swing the plate at me so I thump the plate, which eventually, accidentally caught her face," Stephenson explained. Before sentencing, his mother paid $100,0000 in compensation. Stephenson also apologised for his actions. Crooks made Stephenson the subject of a probation order for a year and ordered that he should receive anger management counselling.
