Excelsior march into quarterfinals with close win over Tivoli
Excelsior High booked their spot in the quarterfinals of the ISSA/WATA Manning Cup competition when they clipped Tivoli Gardens High 3-2 in a hard-fought affair at the Excelsior High school field yesterday in Group One action.
A brace from talisman Kimarly Scott in the 34th and 46th minutes led the way for Excelsior after Terrence Williams opened the scoring in the fifth minute.
Jeremy Forbes in the 74th minute and Horace Morgan in the 90th minute got the goals for Tivoli.
In the group's other game, St Andrew Technical High (STATHS) who had already booked their spot in the quarterfinals, were defeated 1-0 by Wolmer's Boys.
The results mean Excelsior finish atop the group with six points, level with STATHS, but hold the advantage with a better goal difference.
Keon Broderick, head coach of Excelsior, said they had met their objective for the afternoon by securing their spot in the final eight.
He said their season's goal is to go all the way as they aim to bring the Manning Cup title to Mountain View Avenue.
"We ticked one of the boxes going into this game and that was to get into the quarterfinals and once we reach into the last eight then we can look into how we approach each game," Broderick said.
Excelsior wasted little time to get their names on the scoresheet as Williams found the opener within the first five minutes.
With a skilful run off the right flank, he charged into the box, moved past his marker before beating the goalkeeper.
The Eagles doubled their lead just past the half-hour mark when Scott caught the goalkeeper off his line with a well-struck effort from distance.
Excelsior started the second half just as they did the first, finding the back of the net within minutes of the opening whistle.
Scott snagged his brace as he headed home from a corner delivery in the 46th minute.
Excelsior had a prime opportunity to extend their lead to four goals when they won a penalty in the 57th minute, but Kivann Salmon failed to convert.
Tivoli found their footing in the game as the match went on, and Forbes' goal, with 15 minutes left on the clock, set up a dramatic finish.
Tivoli pressed their advantage and found a second in the dying moments of the game when Morgan was on hand to finish into an empty net from an initial save made by Excelsior goalkeeper Jamari Gordon.
