Reggae Girlz goalkeeper Rebecca Spencer has completed a permanent move to Chelsea from Tottenham Hotspur, having spent the last three months at the Blues on loan as an emergency signing due to the club's injury concerns.

Spencer penned a one-year deal with Chelsea, which also carries an option to extend through to 2027.

The veteran goalkeeper had joined Chelsea in March as an emergency loan signing, following an injury to Fenke Liefting, as well as Zecira Musovic being out of action due to her pregnancy.

With Musovic deciding to leave Chelsea at the end of the season, the club turned to Spencer and made her a permanent fixture in their squad.

Spencer was pleased with the move and said Chelsea had always been a place she called home.

"I'm over the moon to be given the opportunity to stay at this magical club, it is somewhere which has always felt like home for me," she said.

"We have amazing fans, and I look forward to coming back into this environment on a permanent basis and working alongside the great goalkeeper's union we have."

Paul Green, Chelsea's head of women's football, described the acquisition as a positive move for the club, having been pleased with her time on loan.

Despite not featuring for the club throughout her loan, Green explained that Spencer had been a positive role model for the younger goalkeepers, and believes she can continue to pass on her experience to her juniors.

"We are really pleased to welcome Becky to the goalkeeping union permanently," he said.

"Her experience will provide cover and enable the younger goalkeepers to pursue valuable development opportunities.

''She settled in well during her loan and is a great character to have in the group. We all look forward to working with her again next season."

BEING A MENTOR

Her new squad role aligns well to comments she made upon signing a contract extension with Tottenham Hotspurs in November last year.

At the time, Spencer said she was hoping to help the young players by passing on her knowledge gained through experience.

"Throughout my career, I have always wanted to be at a club where, once I do finish my playing career, I can leave it in a better state than it was," she had said last year.

"So, for me, not only on the pitch but also off the pitch, I hope to help the youngsters and everyone else coming through, so, when my time is done, I can leave feeling happy."
