JWPL winners lose key players for Concacaf Women’s Champions Cup
Back-to-back Jamaica Women's Premier League (JWPL) champions, Frazsiers Whip, are set to lose up to seven of the players who helped them to their second title recently, for the upcoming Concacaf Women's Champions Cup.
Frazsiers Whip will be Jamaica's first representatives in the continental club championships and coach Christopher Dowdy is now lamenting the loss of some key players who have returned to their colleges in the United States. National forward Shaniel Buckley, Akelia Johnson and Janiel Mignott are three of the top players who will be missing for the Concacaf Women's Champions Cup.
"The league for us was good. The team that played in the league included some of the players who went away to colleges and came back and played for us this season.
"But we will be losing a few of them for the Concacaf Championship.
"We are losing as many as seven players and this will make our participation a bit more challenging. However, the preparations have been good," Dowdy said.
He noted that of all the returning college players only Nevillegail Able will take part in the first game against Costa Rican women's league champions Alajuelense next Tuesday.
Nevertheless, he is confident that the players they have added, mainly through loans from other clubs, will put them in a better place to compete.
"Nevillegail (Able) is one of our centre-backs. She has done well. She will be playing for us in the first game of the (Concacaf) championship before she goes back to college. But we have added players to boost the squad and they have come in and have gelled well.
"We want to go out to play some good football. The aim is to make Jamaica proud. So we are just looking to do our best and gain from the experience of playing in the club championships," he stated.
Frazsiers Whip defeated Arnett Gardens 9-0 to retain the JWPL title recently with Able and Christina Salmon scoring a brace each, and Dowdy was pleased with their dominance over the course of the season.
