Portmore continue to climb JPL standing
Portmore continued their climb up the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) table with a 3-1 win over Dunbeholden in the Portmore derby at the Ashenheim Stadium yesterday.
Tevin Scott in the 47th minute and Chevaughn Walsh in the 69th put Portmore 2-0 up, with De Andre Thomas pulling a goal back for Dunbeholden in the 83rd. Alex Marshall continued his return to form with a strike in time added to seal the win.
The result pushes Portmore to 25 points and into seventh and above yesterday's opponents on goal difference.
Portmore coach, Philip Williams, said it is full speed ahead as they try to break into the top six.
"That is what we want. As a season is closing, we want people to fight, play outside their position and today (yesterday), they put in a good shift for the team. We are not looking behind us. We are looking ahead. Waterhouse won, so they are five points ahead.
"We need to do what we have to do on the day to get results and continue that through the season and give ourselves the best chance possible," Williams said.
Both teams had good chances in the first half, but Scott broke the deadlock two minutes after the break.
For the second consecutive week, Dunbeholden's goalkeeper Damion Hyatt made a massive blunder which gifted Portmore their second.
Thomas' excellent strike halved the score late on, but Marshall replied with an equally impressive goal to put the game to bed.
Dunbeholden assistant coach, Craig Richards, said the result was upsetting and they will have to shake up the team to get consistent results.
"We have to continue working based on the results and what the other teams would have done. This pushes us in the wrong direction, so we need victories.
"How we have been performing is unacceptable, and we have to make some tough decisions going forward in order to get the victories," Richards said.
Meanwhile, Arnett Gardens moved two points clear at the top of the table with 38 points after a 1-1 draw with Humble Lion, and second-place Mount Pleasant lost 2-0 to Waterhouse.
