A St James district constable who is accused of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl was slapped with criminal charges on Tuesday, following a ruling made by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

The accused, who has been identified as 35-year-old Cleavon Heavens, surrendered to the police on Tuesday, on two arrest warrants, for grevious sexual assault and rape.

Reports by the police are that the victim is a close friend with one of Heavens' nieces.

Social media

It is alleged that over a short period of time they became close friends by means of social media, and the district constable informed her that he wanted to meet face to face.

It is reported that he drove to downtown Montego Bay, where he picked her up in his car and drove to a section of Kent Avenue, where he allegedly held her down and had sex with her.

The matter was reported to the police and the child was taken to the Type V Clinic in Montego Bay.

A file was then prepared and sent to the DPP who ruled that Heavens be charged.

Last month, 22-year-old Constable Akeil Maxwell, who was stationed at the Hanover police headquarters, was also charged with raping a 15-year-old girl, while she was in the holding area at the Lucea Police Headquarters.

Maxwell was granted bail in the sum of $1 million when he appeared in court on July 9, and was ordered to surrender his travelling documents, and to report to the Anchovy Police Station three times per week.

He is to return to court on September 24.
