Woman seeks help to care for deceased sister’s kids
Since Tasheika Meeks' sister died in 2016, she has been a mother to her kids. And while it has been a blessing to care for her two nephews, she says it has been a heavy financial burden.
Meeks said that her sister, Shanice Meeks, died of septic shock about three weeks after giving birth.
"Mi have my sister two (nine and three years old), and I have two for myself, and I don't have a lot of help with them. People might see you and don't understand what you are going through. Sometimes the big one father help out, but not much. A mi alone have the baby from him a four days old, and me nah get no help from nobody," she said, crying.
Meeks, 29, told THE STAR that she is not interested in getting monetary help for herself. Instead, she is focused on getting a good education for her sister's children. However, she said that life became even more difficult after she lost her janitorial job.
"Sometimes me frustrated because me feel strained, but a my sister's children and me caan turn mi back pon them because me know she would be there for my children as well. The other day him (nine-year-old nephew) khaki pants tear out, and mi see him a go school wid it same way. It pain me heart fi know seh mi couldn't buy him back one same time, because other children a go school nice and neat, and him a go like ragamuffin. Mi caan feel good inside," she cried.
"I just want the help for the children's education because I can fend for myself. They are getting big, and education is very important. If someone could just help me with that part I would be grateful. The three-year-old don't have a mother or father because him fadda bury last week. So I'm his mother and father now. Anything fi help wid dem schooling, I would appreciate. Mi just want the help for my sister's children."
